Commission classes
A class describes the kind of authority an officer holds. It is not a rank: Class B does not outrank Class A, and no class commands another.
General Authority Peace Officer
County deputies and municipal police: the full range of ordinary criminal and traffic law within their primary jurisdiction.
State General Authority Peace Officer
State Police and Highway Patrol: general enforcement within the statewide mission their enabling statute assigns. Not a higher rank than Class A.
Limited Authority Peace Officer
Institutional and protective police such as SAPS: real police powers inside designated facilities and protective assignments.
Special Enforcement Officer
COLE Criminal Investigations and other investigators with statewide subject-matter jurisdiction over specified offenses only.
Correctional / Detention Officer
Custodial authority over persons lawfully committed to custody. No general patrol or investigative authority.
Reserve / Special Commission
Reserve deputies and specially appointed personnel, limited to the powers their appointment grants.
